I have always been inspired by the New York abstract expressionist painters (1940s to 1960s). New York artists like Hans Hofmann, Helen Frankenthaler and Wolf Kahn continue to influence me.
The title for my painting 'How terrible orange is and life" comes from the poem “Why I am not a painter” by Frank O’Hara. As a poet and art critic in New York City in the 1950s and 60s, Frank O’Hara was part of the abstract expressionist movement. See the poem at www.poemhunter.com
This poem has been on the wall in my studio for many years. It reminds me of the abstract expressionist painters in New York and my own time there in my 20s. It also reminds me to just let the paintings evolve because each work takes on a life of its own.
